If visiting AZ, you must check out Jerome. It’s a short scenic drive from Sedona AZ, about 100 miles north of Phoenix.
Historic Ghost Town
Jerome is a small hillside historic mining town with a current population of 467 and was founded in the late 18th century. Jerome began as a copper mining camp, with settlers residing in tents, ultimately growing into a huge mining community, peaking the population at around 15,000 in the 1920s.
Due to the great depression, the mines were forced to shut down the operation and most people moved away. The remaining population of about 75 people promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967 Jerome was officially designated as a National Historic District by the federal government. Now to be known as the largest ghost town in America.
I decided this would be a great road trip for the girls, so packed up my daughter, her best friend, and my aunt, and off we went, flying down the highway in my big yellow jeep, “Big Bird”.
Check out the things we explored while in Jerome, AZ. Although there are so many cool things to explore here, we only had two days to spend so we woke with the roosters and slept with the cows. Haha
