A huge mountain of rocks on dried-up old Soda Lakebed, known as a “Travelers Monument”, is a long-known tradition amongst adventurers and travelers. It is piled up near mile 100 of the road, just south of Zzyzx. The tradition says that travelers from around the world should carry the largest rock they can and carry it across Soda Lake and place it on the monument for good luck.
There is a small American flag that flies high on the tippy top of the monument, where a secret historical message lies amongst the rubble. You will have to visit the monument to read what the secret message holds. (Please don’t tell the message if known, it is a great adventure that one should experience personally)
The origin of the monument is unclear, but it has been growing for decades with painted rocks, messaged rocks, and even a few nick-nack objects. (You know when jeepers, like me, have been there, they leave mini jeeps or traveling ducks on the monument)
If you love the outdoors, desert, dirt, and just off-roading fun. You must go out and add your rock to this historical monument. Don’t forget to plan your trip, bringing along essential emergency equipment, water, food, and a knick-knack for the collection. Camp out and enjoy the fresh air, and cool breeze and just relax.
